Clean energy investment in emerging markets
The clean energy sector in emerging markets shows great potential to attract investment. Information is key to make good decisions and investors need quality data on issues like a country’s legal framework, the availability of financing opportunities, or the presence of local value chains. The Climatescope 2014 – launched today – is both a report
Data collection with Airwolf
Recently we’ve been working with Research Africa on Airwolf, a platform that provides them and Text to Change with a tool to manage their data collection process: from survey definition to final visualization. Both organizations go through exciting phases of growth and the need to manage their data with the long term in mind was
FlipsideFanzine.com redesign
Last week we launched a thoroughly redesigned version of FlipsideFanzine.com. The previous iteration had remained almost unchanged ever since Flipside started and we felt the need to update the site to make it a good reflection of our team and work. Happy as we were with Jekyll, we decided to stick with the underlying architecture.
Scripted Tilemill exports
A pretty handy feature that is not well documented in TileMill, is the possibility to call the export command from the command line. This is useful, for example, when you have to export a project repeatedly with almost the same settings. In our case we have a dataset with eleven years worth of point data.
Jekyll Talk
Tonight we’ll be at Florida After Seven again, Lisbon’s monthly meetup for people interested in everything related to the web. It’s a great place to meet like-minded people in the city and keep up to date with the latest projects and tech. This edition, I’ll be hosting a talk on Jekyll, the static site generator
Incendios.pt – eleven years of fire data
Large areas of forest and agricultural land burn down each year in Portugal, especially during the hot summer months. Between 2001 and 2011, fires destroyed 416 hectares on average per day, an area equal to 671 football pitches. Today we are launching incendios.pt 0.1, a project we’ve been working on internally for the past months.
Map interaction and zoom levels
An important feature of incendios.pt are the administrative area pages with detailed statistics on fires in that region. To allow users to easily switch between them and compare statistics between regions, we allow click events on the map to browse the site. Every time a user clicks on a specific administrative area type, like District,
Apache Solr Field Collection and text fields
For a recent Drupal project, we used Field Collection, a nifty little module that makes fields fieldable, and Apache Solr to power the site’s search. To make the two play together nicely, the Apache Solr Field Collection module makes sure that all the fields in the field collection are indexed for the search. The setup
Text to Change’s commitment to open data
This is a slightly adapted version of a blog post that was originally published on the Text to Change blog. As technology partners, we are supporting them to open up the datasets that are valuable to other people and organisations. At Text to Change we are firm believers in the benefits of open source: we
Incendios 0.2 – more and improved data
This week we launched a new version of incendios.pt with the most recent data published by ICNF (2012) and easy access to the raw data that powers the site. Download the data Ever since we launched the site a couple of months ago, we frequently receive requests for the raw data that we use on
